		<description>I am not sure how this works.  Coomment appears to be  a question about my source for this statement.  I left academia in the early 1970s to do political work.  The study of race and racism seemed at the top of its form with Robert Allen&#039;s Black Awakening in Capitalist America, Robert Blauner&#039;s Raical Oppression in America, and Harold Cruse&#039;s Rebellion or Revolution.  While a graduate student in the late 1960s I had joined the the Black Power movement, and was course influenced by Carmichael and Hamilton&#039;s classic on Black Power in America.  When I returned to the academy in the late 198os Wilson&#039;s work was all the rage.  I was astonished at its defensive tone.  When I had moved from San Francisco to New York City in the 1986 I had been struck by the frequent accusation of Black folk of playing the race card.  It was at this time that I returned to the academy and began an intensive study of race and racism.  Here are some of the references:
