<blockquote cite="recounts some mocking of the names of black high school students, likely from a white high school student">

Most likely from a white student!?! How can they know that? As a person of non-color or as I prefer to be called a Candescent-American I find it emotionally scaring that someone would insinuate that a person like myself would do such a thing. I will be tramatized for life because of this article.

Asian Americans tend to use European western names for their American born children, though often a generation or two behind (I went to school with Asian girls named Peggy and Betty rather than Megan and Liz).

If I were a parent of one of those students I would have thrown a fit at the school and directly with superintendent. Why the yearbooks weren’t recalled? There are many “whys” here (and the answers of course are all within this website, but still)…. And racism is a thing of the past on the West Coast? I think the faculty overseeing the yearbook project had editing responsibilities that should have caught that—any penalties for them? The students responsible? And to just put a sticker of the birth name over the name in print? Awwww, wet’s put a widdow ban aide over the widdow boo boo and everything will be okay now—I don’t think so. Incredibly insulting. Those are life long emotional scars…and really, they pass on those yearbooks to their future generations? It’s only a testimony of their lived trials and very real, and painful discrimination they endured—in the year of 2008 in the U.S.A., land of the “free” (“free” for whom? And “free” of what?)
