I’m working on a much longer piece, but wanted to briefly mention that the governing body of Formula One racing, FIA, is launching an anti-racism effort after one of the drivers, Lewis Hamilton, was subjected to racist taunts from spectators in Barcelona last week. Well done.

I do not believe “Launching an anti-racist effort” is in itself enough to merit a “well done” particularly given the context of European racism and similar “efforts” that address the actions of individuals but not the social structure that creates those individuals. If I am not mistaken there is an “effort” taking place in European soccer as well which specifically address the actions of individuals and therefore does nothing the ways racism is manifested. So it is my belief that Formula 1 will offer a similar program and create an “effort” that helps to do nothing but reinforce the social structures and white-racist frame that created them in the first place. -W
